Giving 'em Something to Talk About: TruMove Success Stories

TruMove—promoting healthier living through movement care and education in Overland Park KS, the greater Kansas City area, and beyond.

Sure, we can talk extensively about the many ways we at TruMove hope to change the face of healthcare for the better. We can also talk about the positive impact our MOVEMENT movement is already having across Kansas City and our continued efforts to extend our outreach. Still, how do you know that all of the TruMove movement hype is for real? Enter stage right: patients and clients who are happy to share their stories about their TruMove experience.

Sandy Cohen
Physical Therapy, Priority Care Personalized Treatment & Dry Needling

After dealing for quite some time with a recurring calf strain while running, right shoulder pain while swimming, and left knee pain while doing well, just about anything, Sandy Cohen was beginning to wonder when/if he would bounce back. He had tried to self-prescribe treatment with attempts to fix his aches and pains through massage, acupuncture, rest, ice and more. It was then that he heard about TruMove from a good friend and decided to schedule an appointment. The impact was immediate – “From the moment I walked in and was greeted by reception to the continued personal attention I received from Ethan McCoy,” Sandy’s experience was a positive one. “Dry needling has been effective along with the personalized care from Ethan. He is knowledgeable, patient, confident, positive and transfers his energy and passion for the job to me as the patient. I trust him completely.” Sandy’s job as Director of Sales for a local radio company and his hunger for exercise means that he is a guy on the move. “Ethan has given me the ability to get back to my active lifestyle quickly and with confidence,” says Sandy. “I highly recommend him and TruMove.”

Kate Geist
Physical Therapy & Priority Care Laser Therapy

Kate Geist had been suffering with significant knee pain that was affecting her quality of life, making it very difficult to traverse stairs, get in and out of a car, walk and even sleep. She wanted to avoid medications and surgery, so she had scheduled knee injections even though they would not be covered by her insurance. She was desperate for pain relief. Then she heard about laser therapy at TruMove so she decided to give it a try. She was so pleased with the results that she cancelled the injections. “The treatment feels good – it’s warm and relaxing. I noticed immediate and lasting pain relief. I am able to bend my knees more and now I wake up, walk up and down stairs, and get out of my car without pain.” Eager to return to her active lifestyle filled with hiking and travel across the globe, Kate coupled physical therapy with laser treatments for an inspiring comeback.

Jan Ginavan
Physical Therapy

After falling from a ladder, Jan Ginavan was unable to walk due to excruciating pain in her right knee. “I had no solutions,” she says, “until I was referred to TruMove by a coworker.” That word-of-mouth referral along with the clinic’s hours and accepted insurance signaled a green light to Jan to give physical therapy at TruMove a try…and she is definitely glad she did. She teamed up with Brennan Lashbrook to start her journey back to health. “I could tell right away that Brennan knew how to help. I was truly amazed at the improvement,” says Jan. “I am back to doing everything that I used to do before the fall.” Physical therapy at TruMove has given Jan the freedom to get back to living her life to the fullest.

Matt Syverson
Physical Therapy & Priority Care Dry Needling

Matt Syverson is an active guy who enjoys exercise, particularly running. Persistent leg pain following a competitive race left him unable to run and sidelined from the activities he loves. His busy schedule prevented him from seeking help from TruMove initially, but when the pain didn’t subside, he set up an appointment. “Dry needling and TruMove’s philosophy to ‘keep me moving’ and ‘get me back to my activities’” is the reason Matt chose TruMove over other KC clinics. Matt noticed a positive change “after the very first dry needling session with Mark Leyhe. Combining dry needling with physical therapy and a home exercise program has allowed me to return to exercising without pain or worries.”

Teresa Carey
Physical Therapy, Priority Care Personalized Treatment, Dry Needling, Alter G & BFR

After fracturing her heel and suffering from a grade 3 sprain with torn ligaments, Teresa Carey knew that physical therapy would be needed. “I checked with a few national PT firms, but I was concerned about being a number versus receiving individualized care. TruMove’s specialized treatment options beyond PT – particularly the Alter G® treadmill and dry needling – were attractive offerings and have augmented my recovery,” says Teresa. She noticed an immediate improvement in her mobility. “Kim Erisman worked diligently with me, continuing to challenge me at an appropriate pace. I began to feel ‘normal’ again, 3-6 months ahead of my orthopedic surgeon’s projection. I’ve been able to resume running and cycling, increasing my mileage weekly.” Reflecting back on her journey, Teresa adds “This injury was emotionally and physically challenging for me. The TruMove team brought me through it!”

Smitha Mathew
Priority Care Laser Therapy & Dry Needling

Smitha Mathew is no stranger to traveling this road of life while experiencing pain. She has not let the years of chronic back pain and fibromyalgia stop her. Still, a recent flare-up of her lower back pain left her searching for relief. She scheduled an appointment with Ethan McCoy for dry needling. While the dry needling helped somewhat, Smitha felt that she “had hit a plateau and was not healing further.” To help with the pain and inflammation and to stimulate the body’s natural healing process, Ethan suggested that she try laser therapy. The laser treatment provided “a nice warmth for the muscles, but I did not feel much relief directly after the session. For me, the improvement continued for days after, even up to a week. I noticed the most change after the third laser session,” says Smitha. Working together, Smitha and Ethan have found a treatment combo that seems to be yielding great results. “I feel most strengthened in my healing when I have dry needling followed immediately by laser therapy during the same appointment. My lower back pain and the pain around my spine due to fibromyalgia have almost completely disappeared. I feel encouraged that I have found a treatment option that works even when there is a flare-up.”

Patient A (requested anonymity)
Physical Therapy, Priority Care Dry Needling & Laser Therapy

With a trip to Austria approaching, Patient A was fearing that her severe back pain would prevent her from fully enjoying her trip, particularly all of the walking while sight-seeing. In fact, the pain had become so intense that she worried it may prevent her from going at all. Not to mention, she was suffering from tendinitis in her right arm as well, making simple tasks like putting on a coat difficult. Several people recommended TruMove to her so she scheduled an appointment with Brennan Lashbrook. “After only 3 sessions of intense ‘hands on’ therapy and exercises, my back pain was nearly gone. The arm tendinitis took a little longer – 3 months – but even my ortho doctor was impressed with how much my arm had improved with physical therapy,” says Patient A. “Brennan was very positive and encouraging for the entire 5 months I saw him.” Patient A’s back pain has not recurred and she was able to fully enjoy her trip to Austria, not limited by pain, living life to the fullest.
